What is prenatal chiropractic care? At ChiroFamily, we refer to this as the adjustment of an expecting mother’s spine along with soft tissue work as she progresses through pregnancy to help alleviate pain and discomfort. A mother’s body goes through many rapid changes during pregnancy, and our goal is to reduce stress on the spine and release tight muscles and ligaments.

Webster Technique is the most commonly known chiropractic technique to help pregnant mamas. This is a specific technique that first addresses “stuck spots”, otherwise known as subluxations in the pelvis and then goes on to evaluate and release other ligaments and muscles that may be restricting on the womb. When there is a subluxation found in the pelvis, there are stressors that are placed on nearby muscles and ligaments that causes them to be tight and sometimes painful. By adjusting the pelvis and releasing these ligaments we can help create an optimal environment for the baby, all while working to keep mom comfortable throughout her pregnancy.

When pregnant, a woman’s body has an increase in a hormone called Relaxin. This hormone causes the body to do just that, RELAX. In preparation for childbirth, it relaxes the ligaments in the pelvis. Therefore, the doctors at ChiroFamily use low force adjusting techniques, one example being the Activator. While we want movement in the joint that is not moving, we also want stability. During your treatment we will go over clear and simple exercises that you can do at home to help stabilize your pelvis, in turn, helping your adjustments last longer by providing the stability your pelvis needs.

In addition to adjusting and ligament release, we can also tape your belly! Using Rocktape, a form of athletic tape, we aim to stabilize tissue without restricting motion. This is useful especially during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Rocktape can be used to support and lift the belly, provide frontal support for the rectus abdominis, low back pain and much more!

Dr. Dani is currently working on becoming a certified Spinning Babies Aware Practitioner. Spinning babies is a common practice used to restore body balance and make room for the baby. It has had great success for flipping breech babies by balancing ligaments, fascia, and muscles within the pelvis.
